Description:
When Richard Tottel started his law publishing business on Fleet Street in 1553 he could little have expected that his name would inspire the country’s newest law publisher – 450 years later.
Tottel publishing was founded in October 2004 following a management buyout of part of LexisNexis, the biggest and most successful law publisher in the country.
Tottel acquired more than 800 books, journals, newsletters and looseleaf services from the esteemed Butterworths and Tolley imprints – covering most areas of law, tax and the growing law-for-business sector, along with the Scotland and Ireland publishing lists.
Tottel’s founder, Jim Smith – formerly Publishing Director at LexisNexis says "We wanted a new company name with a history attached. Tottel established one of the first and most successful law publishers, in Fleet Street in the 1550s, starting his business on a printing press believed to have been handed down to his father-in-law by William Caxton".
But the name is more than just a gimmick. Smith continues; "We want to get back to some old fashioned law publishing, based on the relationships we have with our customers and our authors".
Smith’s partner in Tottel is Jill Williams, former Finance Director of LexisNexis. The pair have worked together for a number of years, first at Tolley then at LexisNexis following Tolley’s acquisition by LexisNexis Butterworths in 1996.
